Danny Lee Wynter's Ilford Boy runs at the Donmar Warehouse from Saturday 10 October to Saturday 28 November 2026.
Danny Lee Wynter was born in Barking in 1982 and spent twenty years as an actor before he was a playwright — the lead in Stephen Poliakoff’s Joe’s Palace and Capturing Mary in 2007, and a long career in theatre after it. He also founded Act For Change, the campaign that spent a decade making British television and theatre account for who was and was not on their stages, a rare thing for a working actor to do while still needing the work.
His first play, Black Superhero, opened at the Royal Court in 2023 and was about desire, fandom and being a gay Black man in an industry that had decided what he was for. Ilford Boy is the second, and the Donmar describes it as a comedy about the ghosts that follow us, the families we choose, and the Streisand that helps us survive.
It runs at the Donmar Warehouse from Saturday 10 October to Saturday 28 November 2026. Seven weeks is a full booking in a room of two hundred and fifty, and it opens the theatre’s autumn. A second play is the harder one, and this is where the question of whether the first was a one-off gets answered. The Donmar has become the reliable second-play house in London, which is the harder booking to get.
