Wembley held London’s first NFL regular season game in 2007 and was the league’s exclusive home in the city until 2015, which makes it the ground where the idea was proved rather than merely one that stages it. It kept hosting games through 2019 and has done so again since 2022, now alongside the purpose-built stadium in Tottenham. Nearly two decades on, London is the only city outside the United States with a permanent place in the regular season, and Wembley is the largest venue the league plays in anywhere beyond America.
An NFL crowd fills a stadium differently from a football one. It is neutral, loud from the first snap, and wearing the shirts of thirty-two teams rather than two, because most of the people in it support a franchise that is not playing and have come for the sport rather than for a side.
