Tracy Letts’s Pulitzer-winning family saga returns to London in its first major revival, with Lesley Manville as Violet Weston and Anna Maxwell Martin as her daughter.

Tracy Letts’s Pulitzer-winning August: Osage County returns to London in its first major revival at the Noël Coward Theatre in Covent Garden from Monday 18 January 2027. Lesley Manville and Anna Maxwell Martin play mother and daughter.

Letts, an actor and a long-standing member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, wrote the play for that company, which first staged it in 2007. It began Broadway previews at the Imperial Theatre that October and went on to win the Tony Award.

The play made its British debut at the National Theatre in November 2008 and became a film in 2013. Across three acts in a large country house outside Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the Weston family gathers after a sudden crisis, with Violet, the matriarch, at its head.

London has not seen the play for almost 20 years. Manville, a two-time Olivier winner who took the 2026 Tony Award for Best Actress, plays Violet Weston.

Maxwell Martin, a two-time BAFTA winner, plays her eldest daughter, Barbara Fordham. Jeremy Herrin directs, whose work includes Wolf Hall, People, Places and Things and Every Brilliant Thing. He first saw the play on Broadway in 2008, and the production reunites him with Manville.
