The Athens-based artist Theo Triantafyllidis has won the 2026 Frieze London Artist Award and unveils Feral Metaverse (Spider) at the fair in The Regent’s Park, 14 to 18 October 2026.
Theo Triantafyllidis works from Athens in simulation, performance and live-rendered environments — game engines used as a studio rather than as a medium to be commented on. His work is populated by creatures that behave: orcs doing domestic chores, systems left running until they produce something their maker did not plan. The recurring move is to put a real body in front of a world that was built to be played rather than entered, and then to see which of the two adapts.
He has won the 2026 Frieze London Artist Award, and the commission it pays for is Feral Metaverse (Spider): a participatory sculptural installation, a very large spider that visitors engage with directly rather than watch. Frieze has given the award since 2016 to an artist at an early stage, and it is the fair’s one commission rather than a selection from a gallery’s stand.
It goes on display at Frieze London in The Regent’s Park from Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 October 2026, awarded for the first time in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture and co-commissioned with Forma. The Artist Award is the part of the fair that is not for sale, which is a useful thing to know about a week where everything else is: five days, a park, and one commissioned work that exists because a jury chose it rather than because a gallery brought it.
