Alex Patelis spent years as chief economic adviser at the centre of the Greek government’s recovery, and the book is his account of it: the strategy behind the comeback, the position of a technocrat in public service, and where the country’s economic story now sits in a rearranged world.
He takes it fireside with Xenofon Zacharoudis, the Hellenic Bankers Association’s Chairman, and the discussion is held in Greek, in keeping with the language of the book. That single decision tells you the shape of the room.
It is a members-only evening at L’Oscar in Bloomsbury, and it closes with a festive reception — Christmas drinks, canapés and bowl food, doors at half past six. The Association’s last occasion of the year.
