Bacchae

The National Theatre staged a contemporary reimagining of Euripides’ Bacchae in the Olivier from 13 September to 1 November 2025, marking the inaugural production under incoming Director Indhu Rubasingham. Adapted by writer Nima Taleghani, the production drew on movement, music, spoken word and rhyme to retell the ancient Theban tragedy of Dionysus, with an ensemble cast led by Clare Perkins and Ukweli Roach. Running an unbroken hour and three-quarters in the South Bank’s largest auditorium, it set the tone for a new chapter at Britain’s flagship theatre. The run concluded on 1 November 2025.
