Five correspondents who work between Britain and Greece joined an Anglo-Hellenic League panel at the Hellenic Centre in Marylebone on Tuesday 5 May 2026. The subject was reporting one country from inside the other.
The League was founded after the Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913 to counter anti-Greek propaganda in Britain. Its earliest project, through its co-founder John Gennadius, established the Koraes Chair of Modern Greek and Byzantine History at King’s College London.
It raised funds for Greece through two world wars and after the 1953 Ionian earthquakes. In 1979 and 1980 it gave more than £80,000 to the Save the Acropolis campaign. It has given the Runciman Award for a book on Greece in English every year since 1986.
The panel asked how each country reads the other, and what changes when the reporter is also the one explaining it.
