A space scientist and an actress-singer stage the Sun at Cyprus House — Solar Orbiter data, Cypriot myth and live music in one evening, free and booked in advance.
Cyprus House stands on St James’s Square, which Charles II granted to the Earl of St Albans in 1662 and which has held the London Library, Chatham House and four private members’ clubs ever since it was built up. The Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission works out of it, and programmes the building rather than merely occupying it: films, lectures, exhibitions and evenings like this one, all free and all open to anyone who books.
Space on Stage is a genuinely odd hybrid and a serious one. Dr Georgios Nicolaou works on the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter, the spacecraft returning data from closer to the Sun than any before it; Elena Hadjiafxendi is an actress and singer, and the piece is hers as much as his. Together they narrate, sing and play the Sun as two things at once: the object a mission is currently measuring, and the one Cypriot culture has been telling stories about for very much longer.
Nicolaou takes narration, vocals, guitar and the acoustic instruments and Hadjiafxendi narrates and sings. It runs for two hours from seven on Wednesday 21 October 2026, with a wine reception afterwards. Admission is free and places are booked in advance. The Section publishes its programme a season at a time rather than a month at a time.
