/ About

The Idle Rocks sits on the harbour wall at St Mawes, on the Roseland Peninsula, looking south across the mouth of the Fal. The hotel opened in 1913 on the site of the village bakery and had made its name as a luxury coastal hotel by the 1930s. David and Karen Richards bought it in 2010, closed it for a full refurbishment in 2012 and reopened it in July 2013. It is a Relais & Châteaux house of 19 bedrooms, and the MICHELIN Guide awarded it a Key in 2024 and again in 2025.

The Reef Knot Restaurant is the room that matters for an event. Executive Chef Guy Owen cooks from the day's catch, landed a few metres from the kitchen, and the dining room opens onto a south-facing terrace set right above the water, with a wide view over the harbour, the estuary and the Roseland. The restaurant takes exclusive hire for up to 60 guests, and a Chef's Table inside it seats 12.

The larger offer is the hotel itself. The Idle Rocks lets the whole house for an evening or a weekend: every bedroom, the restaurant, the lounge and the terrace, with an events team of its own. It is a small house by design, so the scale is a long table and a house party rather than a ballroom, and that is the reason to take it.
