/ About

Syon House has been the London seat of the Dukes of Northumberland since 1594, built on the site of a Bridgettine abbey whose community left in 1539. Robert Adam remodelled the principal floor in the eighteenth century, and the sequence he left is the reason the house lets at all: the Great Hall, realised to Adam's instruction as a palace of Graeco-Roman splendour, with statues of Roman nobles above a black and white marble floor; the State Dining Room, watched over by marble figures of Ceres and Bacchus; the Long Gallery, 136 feet of gilded pilasters and Percy portraits. Capability Brown laid out the landscape around it over twenty years, and the 200 acres still read as deep countryside nine miles from Charing Cross.

The set piece for a party is the Great Conservatory, Charles Fowler's marvel in cast iron and glass, adorned with palms and exotic trees and available for hire from April to mid-October. It takes 160 for dinner and 350 standing, and the estate says plainly that music and dancing are encouraged beneath the dome. Beside it the newly refurbished Colonnade, glazed in arches over the tidal water meadow, is the space the house turns to for drinks and dancing once dinner is cleared. For scale beyond anything the historic rooms hold, The Clementine is a clear-span glass house of 25 by 55 metres on its own lawns, air-conditioned, with a sound system already installed and a private gated approach.

Hire is direct with the estate's events team, and caterers, production and decor are chosen from an approved supplier list. Guests can take the Hotspur Wing, the Duke's own family apartment overlooking the Thames, for the night. One published limit is worth knowing early: on the estate's own wedding running orders the music stops and the bar closes at midnight.

Adam's room for parading, in his words, the conveniences and the social pleasures of life: Corinthian columns, gilded candelabra on Adam pier tables, and marble statues of Ceres and Bacchus, the gods of food and drink. It takes a long banquet table or a standing reception, and the original dining table's remnants are still hidden in a disguised cupboard.
