The In & Out occupies No. 4 St James's Square, the Grade II* listed mansion that was Lady Astor's London home for thirty years. The club itself dates to 1862, and its nickname came from the carriage gates of the old Piccadilly clubhouse, marked IN and OUT. Behind the square the house opens into a run of state rooms, a walled courtyard and a library.
The rooms are hired by members and non-members alike, which is unusual in this part of St James's. The Coffee Room is the grand one: red damask, gilt chandeliers, a purpose-built dance floor and windows over the gardens of St James's Square. King Harald V, a floor of cream and soft blue panelling under three crystal chandeliers, takes a smaller dinner or a reception. The Astor Room was Lady Astor's bedroom, restored with its gold leaf and a long polished table, and the Canning Room is the club's drawing-room bar, with a listed bookcase, an open fire and a chandelier. Between October and February the courtyard is roofed by the Winter Gallery, a covered space that seats a hundred and twenty.
For a private dinner that turns into a party, the Coffee Room is the room to ask about; it is the only one with a dance floor already in it. Fifty-two bedrooms sit above, and the Piccadilly and Jermyn Street ends of St James's are a short walk in either direction.

The Coffee Room
PrivateThe club's principal state room, on the first floor, hung with red damask under gilt chandeliers and looking out across the gardens of St James's Square. It has a purpose-built dance floor and takes the largest gatherings in the house — a seated dinner, a dinner-dance or a standing reception.
The Courtyard & Winter Gallery
PrivateA walled courtyard behind the clubhouse, laid with stone and shaded by a plane tree, used for al fresco drinks and dining in summer. From October to February it is covered by the Winter Gallery, a roofed structure that holds a seated dinner or a large reception under glass.
King Harald V
PrivateCream, soft blue and gold panelling under double-height ceilings, with three crystal chandeliers, tall windows and window seats. A balcony looks over the Courtyard. Suits a seated dinner, a buffet or a drinks reception.
Astor Room
PrivateNancy Astor's bedroom for the thirty years the house was hers, restored to its gold leaf and centred on a long polished table that looks best by candlelight. An open fire, and a balcony over the Courtyard. Also sets with round tables or for a reception.
Canning Room
Semi PrivateThe club's drawing-room bar, refurbished in 2021 with hand-painted wallpaper, a listed glazed bookcase, an open fire and deep armchairs. Named for the Canning Club, which shared the clubhouse from 1970. Hired for cocktail receptions, and as a lounge or breakout room.
The Library
PrivateFifteen thousand volumes on mahogany shelves reached by a brass ladder, with a quiet outlook over the Courtyard. One long table or three round ones; used for small formal lunches and dinners, and available for private hire in the evening.
The V.A.D. Room
PrivateThe smallest room in the club, kept for intimate entertaining. Double-height ceilings, a chandelier and a sky-blue ceiling over a single long table, with a small balcony onto the Courtyard. A built-in screen with video-conferencing serves meetings.
