Halcyon Gallery

Paul Green opened the first Halcyon in 1982, inside Birmingham New Street station, which is not where most Bond Street dealers begin. Forty years on the gallery runs a flagship at 148 New Bond Street, a second room further down the street, a space inside Harrods and a gallery on West Broadway in New York.

The programme is modern and contemporary, and the names are ones a general audience recognises: Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Bob Dylan, Dominic Harris. Halcyon builds it around large-scale public sculpture placements and museum-scale exhibitions rather than around the art-fair calendar, and the Bond Street rooms are hung to be walked into off the street.

That openness is the difference from the dealer galleries either side of it. Halcyon is open daily, admission is free, and the gallery has run its own launches and receptions for years. Hire is arranged directly.
