/ About
180 Studios is the cultural centre inside 180 The Strand, the Brutalist building by Sir Frederick Gibberd, a short walk from Temple station. The building opened as a cultural venue in September 2016 with The Infinite Mix, the Hayward Gallery's off-site exhibition during its refurbishment. Ryoji Ikeda's test pattern followed in 2017 and drew more than 100,000 visitors, and the building has staged large audio-visual exhibitions ever since.
The hire offer starts in the Atrium, the building's central hub, with a 31-foot LED screen and rotating installations by resident artists. Below it sit raw basement rooms: the 180 Gallery, with its own entrance on the Strand; the double-height 180 Box; and Ruin, named by Virgil Abloh for his 2017 exhibition with Ben Kelly. The Broadcast Studio doubles as a television and video studio, so an evening can be recorded or streamed from the room.
Furniture across the spaces includes pieces by Charlotte Perriand, George Nakashima, Ettore Sottsass and Le Corbusier. Catering comes from the in-house kitchen team, and 180 Corner, a restaurant on the building's eastern corner, takes private dinners.
