The Royal Ballet's Swan Lake returns to the Main Stage at Covent Garden from 27 March to 31 May 2027.
Swan Lake failed. It opened in Moscow in 1877 with choreography nobody liked and was judged a disappointment; Tchaikovsky died in 1893 believing it a failure, and it was Petipa and Ivanov’s revival in St Petersburg two years later that produced the version the world now knows. Almost every subsequent staging descends from that one. The double role is the reason it endures: one ballerina dances Odette and Odile, the white swan and the black, and the second act’s thirty-two fouettés are the most famous technical challenge in the repertoire.
It is also, underneath the tutus, a bleak piece — a prince who chooses wrongly, a woman who cannot be released, and an ending most companies still argue about. Odette-Odile is the role by which a ballerina’s standing at this house is generally settled, so the casting sheet is worth reading before the date is chosen; over nine weeks the company will put several dancers through it.
It returns to the Main Stage at Covent Garden from Saturday 27 March to Monday 31 May 2027. It carries the company from the end of winter into the opening weeks of the London Season. It shares the Main Stage with Tosca and La Gioconda through April and May, which is three of the house’s biggest sellers running at once. It is the ballet everyone has an image of and comparatively few have seen danced properly.
