Phillips gives a whole sale to David Hockney at two on Saturday 19 September 2026, drawn from the print work. Viewing at 30 Berkeley Square from 11 September.
David Hockney was born in Bradford on 9 July 1937, studied at Bradford School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art from 1959, and had made his name before he left it. He worked in oil, acrylic, photocollage, opera design, fax machines and iPads across seven decades, took the Praemium Imperiale in 1989 and the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1997, and died in London on 11 June 2026 at eighty-eight. Printmaking ran through the whole of it.
This is therefore the first single-artist Hockney sale of the period after his death, and the estimates were set before the market has settled to what that means. Editions are where a Hockney stays within reach of a private buyer rather than an institution, and a plate is the same hand at a fraction of the price of a canvas. Three Kings and a Queen carries £6,000 to £8,000, The Student, from Homage to Picasso £10,000 to £15,000, and a plate from A Rake’s Progress £4,000 to £6,000.
Bidding opens at two on Saturday 19 September 2026 at 30 Berkeley Square, with viewing from Friday 11 September. The Editions department runs the sale rather than the picture side of the house. A single-artist afternoon is rare enough at this level to be the occasion in itself, and this one arrives three months after the artist stopped working.
