/ About
Bridge Place is a red-brick house in the village of Bridge, just outside Canterbury, and a Grade II* listed survivor of a much larger mansion built for Sir Arnold Braems, the first manager of Dover Harbour. Most of the house was pulled down in the early 18th century. The wing that remains was rescued in the 1960s and spent the following decades as Kent's best-known rock venue, where Led Zeppelin, The Kinks and The Yardbirds all played early gigs.
Robin Hutson's group took it on in 2018 and opened it as THE PIG at Bridge Place in spring 2019, after an 18-month restoration that kept the panelled rooms, the big fireplaces and the secret stairways. There are 31 bedrooms across the house, the grounds and a row of hop pickers' huts on stilts in the water meadows. The restaurant is built around an open kitchen and cooks a 25-mile menu from one of the largest Kitchen Gardens in the group, with its polytunnels, fruit cages and beehives. Four sitting rooms, one holding a dark panelled bar lit through shelves of coloured glass, each have sofas drawn up to an open fire.
For private dining, the Chef's Table sits just off the main restaurant and seats between 18 and 24 around shared plates, so a party keeps the noise of the room without joining it. The Study, a low-beamed sitting room, is used for meetings when the whole house is taken. The whole property can be taken on exclusive hire, and guests can stay the night.
