Melody Gardot was nineteen and cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003 when a car hit her. She spent a year in a hospital bed with head, spinal and pelvic injuries, relearning ordinary tasks, left oversensitive to light and sound and with a damaged short-term memory. A doctor suggested music as therapy. She learned the guitar lying down, wrote songs to hold the memory in place, and the recordings she made in that state became her first record.
Everything since has carried it. The contralto is smoky and deliberately underpowered, she still performs seated and in dark glasses, and the songwriting has moved through jazz, blues and bossa nova without settling. She is one of the few singers of her generation whose restraint is a technique rather than a limitation. She has recorded in French as often as in English and has spent her working life in Europe rather than the American jazz cities, and it is audible in a repertoire that treats chanson and bossa nova as native.
She plays the Royal Albert Hall on Monday 16 November 2026, a single night inside the EFG London Jazz Festival, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the South African Thanda Choir and the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf.
