Henley Festival runs five black-tie evenings at Leander Club, Henley-on-Thames, from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 July 2027, on a floating stage on the Thames.
The Henley Festival Trust held the first festival in 1982, for two reasons that have not changed: the town wanted a music and arts festival of its own, and the marquees and grandstands built for the Royal Regatta were standing empty the week after it finished. It began as a classical programme with jazz later in the evening, on the Berkshire bank of the Thames, and it still uses the regatta’s structures. It bills itself as Britain’s only black tie festival, which is a statement of intent rather than a dress rule alone.
The Floating Stage is why people describe it the way they do. It sits on the water in front of the audience, so performers arrive by boat and play with the river behind them and the Chilterns beyond that, and the sound carries across open water rather than off a field. The festival is run as a charity, and its RISE initiative funds the next generation of musicians, visual artists and backstage crew.
The 2027 festival runs from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 July at Henley-on-Thames. Headline music on the Floating Stage sits alongside comedy, jazz, classical and visual art in smaller spaces across the site. Dinner is served in the enclosures before the main stage begins, and the site is laid out so that an evening moves between rooms rather than standing in a single field. The dress code is published and enforced.
