Armin van Buuren was born in Leiden in 1976 and started a weekly radio show called A State of Trance in 2001, which is the thing that made him rather than any single record. It has run every week since, is carried in dozens of countries, and turned a Dutch DJ into the organising principle of an entire genre: five times voted the world’s number one DJ, and appointed to the Order of Orange-Nassau at home.

Trance is the least fashionable dance music and one of the most durable, and A State of Trance is why. The show became a record label, a compilation series and then a touring festival that fills stadiums in places where the genre is supposed to have died out. Twenty-five years of it is the anniversary being marked here. The compilations run to more than twenty volumes and the show has passed its thousandth episode, which for a weekly programme about one genre of dance music is close to unrepeatable.

The London edition is at Drumsheds on Saturday 14 November 2026, one until half past ten across the X, Y and Z rooms, and it is the first indoor ASOT festival staged in Britain. Van Buuren plays, and goes face to face with Giuseppe Ottaviani; Ferry Corsten, Cosmic Gate, Ben Hemsley, Andrew Rayel and a dozen more fill the rest. The door is over-18.
